Brauhaus Schmitz to debut rare German beer Frankenheim Alt this week

When it comes to rare German beers not available anywhere else in America, Brauhaus Schmitz is Philly’s go-to spot. And starting this week, they’ll be your only option for a pint of coveted Frankenheim Alt.

When it comes to rare German beers not available anywhere else in America, Brauhaus Schmitz is Philly's go-to spot. And starting this week, they'll be your only option for a pint of coveted Frankenheim Alt.

Philly's own authentic bierhall will play host to the rare German brew, which is described as a "lush German top-fermenting lager," beginning Wednesday at 5 p.m. First beers will be free for the first 100 attendees.

If you don't get there early, though, have no fear — 14-ounce pours will be going for just $5.50 apiece.

Produced by Privatbrauerei Frankenheim, Frankenheim Alt comes to us courtesy of Brauhaus owner Doug Hager, who discovered the "alt" style of German beer during his years in Germany. The name is German for "old," and is reportedly a call-back to the beer's traditional style, which makes it one of only a few pure German beers on Earth.

"We invite everyone to join us at Brauhaus and taste one of the most interesting beers in the world," Hager said of the coming brew.

And that invite is a good thing, too. This Wednesday will be the first time Frankenheim Alt will be available in the Philadelphia market since 2002.

So, naturally, us folks here in Philly have just one thing to do come Wednesday: Drink up.
