Carla Hall, chef on ABC's The Chew, will be in town on Thursday, Nov. 20 for the American Diabetes Association and Sun Life Financial's program "America Gets Cooking to Stop Diabetes," a healthy approach to traditional Thanksgiving,
It will run from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Sub-Zero & Wolf Showroom (4050 S. 26th St., in the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia). Guillermo Pernot, Delilah Winder, and Barbie Marshall will do cooking demonstrations.
It is free, but tickets are required.
Nearly 30 million people living in the United States have diabetes, and an additional 86 million have pre-diabetes or are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. America Gets Cooking to Stop Diabetes will show home cooks how to create healthier meals that don't compromise flavor this holiday season.
Hall will provide commentary as each chef creates his/her special dish. Demo chefs include chef Guillermo Pernot, concept chef and partner at Cuba Libre and a two-time James Beard Award winner. Pernot will be preparing braised calabaza in Cuban sofrito and almond-chocolate picada.
Chef Delilah Winder, director of the Dorrance H. Hamilton Center for Culinary Enterprises, will demonstrate how to lighten up fan favorite macaroni and cheese.
Chef Barbie Marshall, a graduate of Johnson & Wales and a finalist on Hell's Kitchen, Season 10, will round out the demo chef team. She is a champion for sustainable foods and a healthy approach to eating. She'll be roasting a Quarry Hill Farm heritage bred turkey and demonstrating how to thicken the turkey gravy with vegetables instead of flour.
