Neumann-Goretti H.S. evacuated because of smoke

Smoke from an overheated air conditioner forced the evacuation of 210 students and 44 faculty members and staff from Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti High School in South Philadelphia this morning.

Inquirer staff writer Zoe Tillman reports:

Smoke from an overheated air conditioner forced the evacuation of 210 students and 44 faculty members and staff from Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti High School in South Philadelphia this morning.

School maintenance staff unplugged the machine and put out the small fire with fire extinguishers this morning before firefighters arrived, said to Archdiocese spokesman Kevin Mulligan.

As a precaution, the students were moved from their school, on the 1700 block of S. 10th Street, to Annunciation BVM School on the 1100 block of Wharton Street. Since today was a scheduled early dismissal day, Mulligan said students went home early.

No injuries were reported.
