GW Bridge may be no joke for governor

The alleged conspiracy related to four days of epic gridlock in and around Fort Lee could trouble Gov. Christie down the road; on Wednesday, a Democratic PAC serendipitously named "American Bridge" released a punchy graphic featuring the GWB and bashing the governor.

The  controversy about September's mysteriously ill-advised George Washington Bridge toll lane closures may seem arcane, parochial and petty to New Jerseyans more concerned with spans named Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman.

But the alleged conspiracy related to four days of epic gridlock in and around Fort Lee could trouble Gov. Christie down the road; on Wednesday, a Democratic PAC serendipitously named "American Bridge" released a punchy graphic featuring the GWB and bashing the governor.

Meanwhile, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials have so far failed to offer curious Democratic legislators a convincing or even coherent account of how a "traffic study" for which neither records nor rationale exist was implemented without warning -- after Fort Lee's mayor declined to endorse Christie's re-election bid.

Questions about whether the study's evidently immaculate conception had anything to do with him are "crazy," said the governor, who also quipped that he "moved the cones" and blocked the lanes himself.

What's clear is that the flap about the study has inspired the resignation of a Port Authority director and Christie pal David Wildstein, and led the Port Authority's inspector general to announce an investigation.

"We just want to get to the bottom of it," says Michael Nestor, the office's lead investigator.

Please do.
