Temple has made no secret of wanting to join the Big 12. It looks like the conference is willing to listen to the Owls' case.

ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported Friday morning that Temple will be one of a whopping 17 expansion candidates that the Big 12 will talk to.

Among the other schools being considered, according to McMurphy, are: Cincinnati, Houston, Brigham Young, South Florida, Central Florida, Connecticut, Memphis, Colorado State, Boise State, Tulane, East Carolina, Southern Methodist, New Mexico, Northern Illinois and San Diego State.

Nine of those schools are Temple's colleagues in the American Athletic Conference. McMurphy's story named 16 of the 17 total schools under consideration.

Perhaps because the group of candidates is so large, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby will talk with each school's representatives by video conference instead of in person.

It looks like the field is competing for just two invitations. Past reports and rumors said the Big 12 was looking to expand by four teams, but McMurphy reported he's hearing that number has been cut in half.
