Russell cancels workout with Sixers

LAS VEGAS –  D'Angelo Russell canceled this weekend's scheduled workout with the 76ers after getting  "real sick," according to a source close to the former Ohio State standout. Another source said don't rule out the franchise securing a workout with Russell in the near future.

Several pre-lottery mock drafts have the 76ers taking Russell with the third overall pick in the June 25 NBA draft.  The 6-foot-5, 193-pounder could potentially form a talented trio with center Joel Embiid and power forward Nerlens Noel for seasons to come.

However, Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie spent Friday at Impact Basketball to watch 7-1 power forward Kristaps  Porzingis  at the ASM Sports Pro Day. DraftExpress has the Sixers taking Porzingis third overall in the draft.

Hinkie would not comment on Russell cancelling his workout or his level of interest in Porzingis. The general manager is familiar with Porzingis. He watched the Latvia native play several times this past season in Spain.

Russell averaged 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 41.1 percent on three-pointers last season en route to being named a first-team all-American and Big Ten freshman of the year.

Five Sixers executives, including Hinkie, were on hand when the Louisville native collected 23 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds in a 79-60 victory at Rutgers in February.
