Reliving 'The Streak:' The Undertaker defeats Giant Gonzalez at WrestleMania 9
Now that The Undertaker's famous undefeated streak has ended, we can now look back it in its entirety. In the days leading up to WrestleMania 31, we will take a look back at every memorable chapter of the feat that can never be duplicated. Here's a look at what became the holy grail of professional wrestling.
The Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez (3-0)
WrestleMania IX | Caesar's Palace — Las Vegas | April 3, 1993
Match length: 7:31
WWE Chief Operating Officer Vince McMahon loves his wrestlers to be larger than life — in personality and in stature.
He also loves pitting these larger-than-life bodies against each other in matchups between monstrous men in what he hopes will attract the masses to look in awe at what they see in the ring.
McMahon did that at WrestleMania IX when he put the towering Undertaker against one of the few men he's ever had to physically look up to — Giant Gonzalez.
While McMahon got his monster match-up, the result was probably the worst match during The Undertaker's famed winning streak at WrestleMania.
Gonzalez was indeed massive, but although he stood nearly eight feet tall, he didn't have the work rate to match.
The only real takeaway from this match was how it ended, as it is still the only match in the streak to end by disqualification. I don't foresee the WWE going back to that well with an Undertaker match, so it will probably keep that distinction.
The story of the contest was that The Undertaker had finally met his match in the massive Gonzalez. Instead of having either man outright lose the match, Gonzalez used chloroform to knock out The Undertaker.
Gonzalez's use of the chloroform earned him a disqualification and gave The Undertaker the victory, barely extending the streak to 3-0. The Undertaker was then carried out on a stretcher, only to come back and get the better of Gonzalez.
When it was all said and done, it was yet another forgettable chapter in the Undertaker's WrestleMania winning streak.
