Union's Andre Blake named to Major League Soccer's Best XI for 2016 season

Union goalkeeper Andre Blake was named to Major League Soccer's Best XI, the team of the year, for the 2016 season.

Union goalkeeper Andre Blake was named to Major League Soccer's Best XI, the team of the year, for the 2016 season.

MLS announced this year's honorees on Monday. As is just about always the case, the group was dominated by attacking stars:

Goalkeeper: Andre Blake (Union)
Defenders: Matt Hedges (FC Dallas), Axel Sjoberg (Colorado Rapids), Jelle Van Damme (Los Angeles Galaxy)
Midfielders: Mauro Diaz (FC Dallas), Giovani dos Santos (Los Angeles Galaxy), Sacha Kljestan (New York Red Bulls), Ignacio Piatti (Montreal Impact)
Forwards: Sebastian Giovinco (Toronto FC), David Villa (New York City FC), Bradley Wright-Phillips (New York Red Bulls)

The league asks voters to assemble players in something resembling an actual soccer formation, but that's about it. There's no requirement to include a defensive midfielder or outside backs, and more often than not, three forwards make the squad.
