It's Friday, you thirsty yet? Beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5 and continuing through 7 p.m., the Wagner Free Institute of Science (1700 W. Montgomery Ave.) invites you to taste the mixture of honey-infused beer by the Philly Homebrew Outlet and local brewer David Shuetz during a special Honey Happy Hour. Drinking isn't the only thing that makes this hour happy. Enjoy catered eats by Whole Foods Market, watch honey extraction demonstrations, win special prizes, and even check out bee-bearding... Yes, bees creating a beard on one's face.
Get sticky-icky on Saturday, Sept. 6 as the Wyck House (6026 Germantown Ave.) throws an eventful day perfect for families and adults. During the morning, kids are invited to partake in workshops with honey, such as wax-making, building your own bee antenna, and even getting a picture taken as the Queen Bee. If your children are a little older, other things to do will involve looking inside a beehive, mead-making workshops, and bee extractions.
If you left the kids at home, or don't have any at all, at noon a "Mead Making, Tasting, and Sharing" event will take place in Wyck's garden involving professional brewers judging homemade meads. If you are a home brewer and want great feedback and tips, register your sudsy creation by 11 a.m.
On Sunday, Sept. 7, Bartram's Garden (5400 Lindbergh Blvd.) closes up the hive of events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a big buzz as visitors can learn more about beekeeping and its importance on the ecosystem. Watch a cooking contest involving honey, and purchase local products and plants. At 3:30 p.m., cheers off your weekend with snacks, and special cocktails made from Bartram's bitters, a family recipe that Philadelphia Distilling turned into this alcohol preparation product.
