PHL gets federal stimulus funds for security upgrade

PHL is getting $26 million in Homeland Security funding from the economic stimulus program to add two in-line baggage-screening machines. The award was announced at the airport today by Homeland Security Secrertary Janet Napolitano, joined by a large cast of political leaders (governor, mayor, both senators, a congressman). PHL now will have four of the upgraded screening and explosive-detection devices, which replace other machines, some of them still in the ticket lobbies, where bags had to be dropped off after checkin. The new machines are faster and better and eliminate that extra step in checking bags, the officials say. Here's airline reporter Linda Loyd's story on the announcement.
