Maiden voyage
Boeing's 787 is a radical departure in design: By weight, about 50 percent of the plane is made of composite materials, instead of metal. The plane will be quieter, produce fewer emissions, and use less fuel than comparable aircraft. Passengers will travel in a more comfortable cabin with better air quality and larger windows.

Boeing's long-delayed dream takes wing: Two years overdue, the first 787 Dreamliner lifts off for a test flight in Everett, Wash. Boeing already has orders for 840 of the aircraft. The 787-9 Dreamliner is unique in terms of range, length, weight and cargo volume:
8,000-8,500
range, in nautical miles, the longest of the 787s
206
length in feet
540,000
maximum takeoff weight in pounds
5,400
total cargo volume in cubic feet
