Aetna Inc. has signed a contract with the Delaware Valley Accountable Care Organization expected to cover 70,000 commercially-insured Aetna members under the care of primary-care physicians in the Philadelphia-area ACO, the Connecticut insurer said Tuesday.

The Aetna deal is the first commercial contract for the Delaware Valley ACO, which is owned by Main Line Health, Jefferson Health, Holy Redeemer Health System, Doylestown Health, and Magee Rehabilitiation Hospital.

Since 2014, the Delware Valley ACO has been participating in a Medicare shared-savings program.

Under the arrangement with Aetna, physicians will be financially rewarded for meeting goals believed to improve quality, lower costs, and improve patient satisfaction.

Examples include the reduction of avoidable hospital admissions emergency room visits, as well as increasing appropriate cancer screenings and comprehensive diabetes care.

The Delaware Valley ACO includes 671 physicians, and more than 80 percent of them are participating in the Aetna arrangement.

Aetna has similar relationships with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Mercy Health System of Southeastern Pennsylvania (Mercy Accountable Care), and St. Mary Medical Center (Quality Health Alliance), but details on the number of patients covered were not available.
