Why News Corp. pulled the plug on The Daily - The Atlantic

The Daily – or at least, what's left of it – will cease to exist in two weeks.

News Corp. is shutting down the operation that publishes the iPad app on Dec. 15, according to MarketWatch (a News Corp. property). The staff will be folded into the New York Post, another News Corp. publication.

The Daily launched in Feburary 2011 with the promise of bringing the newspaper experience to the tablet. News Corp. called the $30 million-a-year venture a "bold experiment." It cut a third of the staff earlier this year.

As to why it failed, The Atlantic pointed to two things: Timing and the inability to share content with friends, family, colleagues and classmates.
