Both houses of the New Jersey legislature this week passed the Safe Patient Handling Act, a bill meant to reduce injuries to hospital and nursing home employees and patients.

The bill requires the health-care facilities to develop plans over several years to minimize manual lifting by employees. Various devices can make it easier for nurses and other workers to move patients. The bill, which was passed by the Senate Monday and the Assembly last night, has been sent to Gov. Corzine for approval.
