Rex Medical L.P. said today that its implant to prevent pulmonary embolisms has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The fast-track 510(k) clearance, designed for devices that are basically equivalent to something already on the market, allows the privately held Conshohocken medical-device maker to proceed with its Option Retrievable Vena Cava Filter to prevent recurrent pulmonary embolisms - blood clots in an artery in the lungs.

The device can be used either temporarily or permanently.

Rex Medical specializes in making minimally invasive medical devices for the cardiovascular, venous access, endosurgery and oncology markets.
