The state has exceeded, by 458 bridges, its goal of beginning work on 1,145 structurally deficient bridges, Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler said.

PennDot said that the number of structurally deficient bridges is now down from a high of 6,034 in mid-2008 to 5,371.

For 2011, PennDot said, it expects to initiate $1.7 billion in highway and bridge contracts.    - Inquirer staff
