AN 18-YEAR-OLD youth was taken into custody yesterday after police recovered a handgun at a Philadelphia high school.

The incident happened at Samuel Fels High School, on Langdon Street near Sanger in Crescentville. Officers responded to the school about 10 a.m. after a student reported seeing a gun, officials said. The school was placed on lockdown until about 1:30 p.m.

During a search, cops found an unloaded revolver inside a trash can in the weight room, district spokesman Fernando Gallard said.

Gallard said an 18-year-old student who is a senior at Fels was taken in for questioning, but no charges had been filed as of yesterday afternoon. Gallard said the student would be referred for expulsion.

Police were investigating how the student obtained the gun and how it was brought into the school.
