Villanova professor honored for research

RADNOR A Villanova University professor of computing sciences is the recipient of the 2015 Outstanding Faculty Research Award, the school announced.

The research of Giorgi Japaridze, a 17-year member of the computing sciences department, primarily focused on computability logic. One of Japaridze's objectives is to develop a common computer language that would let average users easily write programs.

Japaridze "has been described as 'one of the deepest and most originally thinking' current logicians," Alfonso Ortega, associate vice president for research and graduate programs, said in a statement.

Japaridze, a native of the Republic of Georgia, holds doctoral degrees in philosophy from Moscow State University and computer science from the University of Pennsylvania. He speaks five languages.

"This recognition is a source of encouragement and a motivator to continue to strive for further accomplishments," Japaridze said in a statement.

On April 21, Japaridze is scheduled to discuss his research at 2 p.m. in Villanova's Falvey Memorial Library reading room. - Mari A. Schaefer
