On Monday afternoon, Gawker reported that NBC News foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, and his Turkish colleague ,Aziz Akyavaş,have gone missing in Syria. In the Gawker post, John Cook says that NBC News had successfully kept Engel's status out of headlines—thanks to a media blackout—for at least 24 hours. Turkish outlets—including a newspaper and a television station—have been reporting that Engel is missing.

"But NBC News has been asking every reporter who inquires about the report to participate in a news blackout. It has also taken to Twitter and asked people who repeated the Turkish reports there to take them down."

The story is reminiscent of the tale of New York Times reporter David Rohde, who made it safely back from the hands of the Taliban (presumably) thanks to a news blackout. Richard Engel last reported from Syria on December 11th. [The Atlantic Wire]
