EATS BEAT * Butchers and fishmongers from Whole Foods Markets are going blade to blade in a national slice-and-dice contest that has its local qualifying event at 10 a.m. April 25 at the Plymouth Meeting store (500 W. Germantown Pike, 610-832-0010). Ten butchers and 10 fishmongers will compete, one each from 10 area stores, in several categories. Finalists will head to a regional event May 23 in Virginia Beach. The final smackdown will be held in September in Portland, Ore.

* Hail to the Chefs, benefiting the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, will be held 6-9 p.m. April 29 at the Knowlton Mansion (8001 Verree Road). More than 20 Northeast Philly restaurants will participate. Tix for the fundraiser are $42 at gnpccfoundation.org.
* Have a beer and make a hungry kid happy from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday as Brauhaus Schmitz (718 South St., 267-909-8814, brauhausschmitz.com) hosts a "No Kid Hungry Happy Hour." A dollar of every $5 German import on tap will go toward efforts to get food to those in need. You can also purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win two VIP tickets to Taste of the Nation April 28 at the Hotel Monaco. * Chef Walter Staib of the City Tavern brings history to life - or at least to the table - with a re-enactment of his Emmy-winning PBS TV series, "A Taste of History," at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Perelman Theater, in the Kimmel Center (300 S. Broad St., 215-670-2300, kimmelcenter.org). The occasion is the 270th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's birth, and the event is part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, continuing through April 27. $25-$35 at PIFA.org, 215-546-PIFA (7432), or the Kimmel Center box office.

* Talk with more than 100 farmers, food artisans and sustainable business owners at Philly Farm & Food Fest, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center annex.
