Thai Singha House returns: One of the older names on Philadelphia's Thai scene, dating to 1990, is back in business in
University City. In fall 2013, Thai Singha closed at 3939 Chestnut St., relocated by construction.
Thomas Gamble has brought it back, to 3906 Chestnut St. (215-382-8001, which you may still have on speed-dial). It's now a BYOB, open daily, with similar menus.
BBQ on the move: Fat Jack's BBQ will close in Jenkintown at the end of the month and move south to Elkins Park's Shops at Yorktown (8120 Old York Road), taking the former Burger.Org space. The place will open in early March with an expanded menu that includes brisket tacos and quesadillas.
Patties for a cause: George and Kim Mickel have opened their third stand at Reading Terminal Market. Hunger Burger replaces Tokyo sushi. It joins the couple's By George, their Italian shop (1990), and Mezze, the Mediterranean takeaway (2003).
The name references the Mickels' mission to set aside a portion of the profits for hunger-relief groups. Menu is built around grilled Black Angus burgers from Creekstone Farms served on Martin's potato rolls ($4.50 and up); milkshakes ($5.50) made with Bassetts Ice Cream; breakfast burgers and sides. When I wrote about this project in August, I noted that a guy named George Mickel opening a burger shop should serve a WHamburger. It's on the menu.
