Grow herbs in a jar
If you like the idea of aquaponics but aren't quite ready to turn your basement into a fish farm, you can start small with AquaJar. An ecosystem in a mason jar, it's designed to be a fish habitat you can also use to grow fresh herbs year-round on your windowsill. (It comes with a caveat: The product is designed by a Newark, Del., start-up that just finished a successful crowdfunding push on Kickstarter. But it's new to distribution, so expect it could take several weeks to arrive.)

Perfect paella pan
Hardcore paella fans know the Spanish rice dish is best cooked over an open flame. But it may be even better roasted over the hardwood coals of an old-school grill, where the option of a little lid closure can infuse some smoke. The Big Green Egg company, producer of one of the most popular smoker-grills, has a paella pan perfect for the task. The double-handled pan has slightly deeper-than-usual sloping sides for easy maneuvering and its stainless steel is a heavy enough gauge to allow the rice to form a crispy socarrat crust along the bottom without burning too easily.
