14 local gifts for foodies

Everyone has a few cooking connoisseurs and food enthusiasts to buy holiday gifts for this month.  Let's be honest: trying to figure out what crazy gadget to get them this year is tough, considering that there's a good chance they already own it. While scanning the interwebs and pavements of our lovely city, I came across some spots to check out if you're shopping for a foodie.

The Tubby Olive: Gourmet Oils and Vinegars on Tap is a hidden treasure at the Reading Terminal Market. Next to Molly Malloy's, the Tubby Olive is a room full of traditional, infused and organic olive oils and balsamic vinegars on tap.  The Tubby Olive, originally from Newtown, Pa., offers samplpesn of crazy concoctions like Sicilian Lemon White Balsamic and Cilantro with Roasted Onion Oil. The delicious Cinnamon Pear Balsamic can be drizzled over fruit and desserts and combined with the Basil Olive Oil.  The Blackberry Ginger Balsamic was my favorite so far and for the confused shopper, gift "tubs" with recipe cards and spices are available.  Don't forget to hit up Amy's Place for some 'I never would have thought of that' gift ideas and Contessa's French Linens for beautiful bright table lines, napkins and aprons.

Old City's Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction not only sells just-plain-cool clothing and accessories from local designers, but is filled with tasty spirits and home goods.  The Rhuby, Snap, Root, and Sage collection of spirits are delicious gifts and these Wolly Wally Wall Planters are a great addition to the kitchen.  For a smaller version, check out City Planters in Northern Liberties, here. For you mid-towners, check out the Kitchenette for Bodum electric kettles and french presses, copper Mauviel cookware, and brightly colored Waechtersbach Ceramics.  You'll love the Jesse Steele's '50s-style aprons & the hilarious "housewife" coasters and flasks by Anne Taintor.

When it come to every nook, cranny and appliance in the tri-state area, my mom is the guru in the kitchen department. Fante's Kitchen Shop on Ninth Street between Washington Avenue and Christian Street is a favorite. The staff members are not only knowledgeable, they make you feel like family. Kitchen Kapers is also a go-to for fun cooking gadgets and gift ideas (check website for nearest location).
