Philly on CNN's best beer town list

We're #6.

CNN - the noted arbiter of all things food and drink - ranks Philly as #6 in its list of the eight best beer towns in America.

It's deemed "a beer explorer's must-see town, despite state controls that regulate purchases of packaged beer."

Ah, yes.

Ranking the cities on a 10-point scale, CNN scored Philly a 9 for history, 6 for breweries, 8 for bars, and 7 for events. Portland was ranked at the top, followed by San Francisco, San Diego and Boston. Philly falls between Denver and Bend, Ore. Ashville, N.C., is eighth.

The report mentions breweries Victory, Sly Fox, Nodding Head, Yards and Flying Fish, and the watering holes  McGillin's Olde Ale House, Eulogy Belgian Tavern, Grey Lodge, Memphis Taproom ("which enjoys a sterling reputation despite an endorsement by Guy Fieri") and Monk's Cafe.

The editors deem Philly Beer Week  (May 31-June 9) "the city's most hoppening event" and say the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Beer Festival is "already proving a worthy companion."

Good timing for the festival. It's this Saturday, May 11, at Cannstatter Volksfest-Verein in Northeast Philly.
