Sausages on the sidewalk at Red Owl Tavern

The grill comes out May 24.

That's when chef Guillermo Tellez plans to set up a big ol' grill outside of Red Owl Tavern at the Hotel Monaco at Fifth and Chestnut Streets, across from Independence Mall, where he will sell four or five varieties of housemade sausage.

Because of city zoning code, it won't entirely be self-service. Staffers will have to take your order but you can apply the condiments, including sauerkraut and slaw.

He's tinkering with the variety, but mentioned a Vietnamese-style with ginger, lemon and chilies, a pork sausage made with fresh herbs, an Andoulle, a Linguiçai, and a spicy Italian.

This is a field test, Tellez advises. If it goes well, he'll repeat it once a month or so in season.
