Shop local on Saturday
Black Friday gets all the headlines, but we're big fans of Small Business Saturday, when we're urged to spend our hard-earned bucks at local shops.
Neighborhoods throughout the area are holding special Small Business Saturday events: Mayor Kenney will stop by Manayunk; Chestnut Hill boasts Mummers and elves; Fairmount offers shoppers a chance to win a $50 Buy Local gift card.
Haddonfield makes a whole weekend out of the post-Thanksgiving shopping extravaganza. Friday kicks off the holiday season with horse-drawn carriage rides from 6 to 9 p.m. (they will continue throughout the weekend, as well) and the tree-lighting at 6:30 p.m. at Library Point.
Sure, there are music and activities, but most important, there's shopping: Beginning Friday, the Haddonfield Information Center (2 Kings Court, Haddonfield, N.J.) will start selling townwide gift certificates at a 10 percent discount. Stores along Kings Highway and beyond will offer special discounts to shoppers. Running Co. of Haddonfield (121 Kings Highway East, Haddonfield, N.J.), for instance, offers a 15 percent discount and a $10 gift certificate for every $100 spent. Other shops will hold special events. Hooked Fine Yarn Boutique (411 North Haddon Ave.) will have $5 mini-sessions all day Saturday, while Game Friendzy (7 Kings Court) brings in local author Lori Samlin Miller from 1-3 p.m. Sunday for a kids-focused writing workshop.
