Somewhere around Mother's Day I not only clean and arrange my outdoor furniture, and plant my flower pots but I also swap out my winter pillows and an oriental area rug in my family room. It's a rite of passage each season to transition from a winter home to a summer home. While I love cuddling up in my fur blanket and sitting by a fire on my overstuffed sofa with the brown leaves on the pillows, it seems awkward in the middle of July; heavy, cumbersome. I want light and bright. The indoor activities give way to the outdoor activities and your home should follow suit.  The goal is to transition seamlessly from the indoors out and vice versa.

I grab my jute rug, the linen geometric pillows and a cotton blanket. I clean my fireplace of soot and fill it with candles. I have not only lightened up, I've brightened up!  I feel like a new person for a little while. I think changing your surrounds through accessories gives you a fresh perspective, puts a little "spring" in your step. I know people say, "but I have nowhere to store all these things." Use the same pillow fills and just change the covers. Grab a rag or linen rug, they take up almost no room. Shop for some white or colorful accessories, fill a vase with fresh flowers and your spring/summer transformation is complete. It couldn't be easier to transform the seasonal room in mere minutes.
