The city Commerce Department has awarded a $1-million grant for a skateboard park at the north end of the Schuylkill Banks development along the Schuylkill.

The grant goes to the Franklin's Paine Skatepark Fund, which has been raising money to build the park. It will be available for skateboarding and general public use.

Cancer Center makes plea

Fox Chase Cancer Center officials yesterday called on City Council, meeting today in special session, to table legislation that would enable the research institution to expand onto 19.4 acres of Burholme Park, part of the Fairmount Park system.

Fox Chase Chancellor Robert Young said "several key points" had not been resolved, and he urged Council to defer action until Mayor-elect Michael Nutter and a new City Council are seated next year.

Fattah endorses Obama

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah is endorsing Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for president. The Philadelphia congressman said yesterday that Obama is the candidate with the best chance to restore America's prominence on the world stage.

FAA: New flight plan to begin

The Federal Aviation Administration said yesterday that it plans to begin using controversial new flight paths today at Philadelphia International Airport, assuming the weather is favorable.

The move comes amid heavy political opposition in Delaware County and in South Jersey, where some residents will experience an increase in overhead noise. Delaware County officials filed a motion this month asking the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals to halt the FAA's airspace redesign until about a dozen federal lawsuits could be heard.

Delco raising taxes 8.4%

Delaware County is increasing property taxes by 8.4 percent next year, but those who live or work in Chester will see their income taxes decrease under the city's proposed 2008 budget. *
