Olney man killed by fire at his home

Mariah Hill was headed home from work yesterday afternoon for a quiet night with her family, but instead she came upon an unspeakable horror.

She found her husband, Gary Hill, on fire inside the family's garage at their home on B Street near Nedro Avenue, in Olney, shortly after 4 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last night, as the faint smell of smoke wafted through the cool night air, Mariah stood shocked, surrounded by family and friends.

"I don't know what happened, I just came home from work and saw the smoke and found him like that," Hill said.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 4:13 p.m. and had the fast-moving fire under control by 4:28 p.m., officials said.

Fire officials confirmed one fatality but said that the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

"This is devastating me, we've been together for 13 years," Hill said, as she broke down sobbing.

Mariah and her husband have three children together, she said. "Everyone is just in shock right now," she said.

Neighbors on the Olney block didn't know the Hill family very well because they had recently moved to the neighborhood.

"It's just so sad," one neighbor said.
