One man is dead, another was in critical condition after they were shot in Fern Rock just before midnight Friday, police said.

The two were shot about 11:30 p.m. on 12th Street near Chelten Avenue. The 21-year-old man who was killed has yet to be identified by police, and was pronounced dead shortly after being shot in the left eye and chest.

The other man, 35, shot in the neck and chest, was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center. He is expected to recover.

Man shot in accident

A 19-year-old man is recovering from a gunshot wound to the stomach after a friend accidentally shot him inside a South Philly pizza shop on Saturday, police said. The two were in the eatery on 3rd Street near Snyder Avenue about 12:30 p.m., when one pulled out a gun and started showing it off, police said. The gun went off, striking the man in the abdomen.

He was rushed to Jefferson Hospital where he was expected to recover. The shooter, a 40-year-old man, was taken into police custody and was expected to be charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and weapons offenses.

4 hurt in Ogontz blaze

Four people, including a firefighter, were taken to area hospitals after a fire broke out inside a Ogontz home yesterday morning, said a fire official.

Firefighters responded to a call of a fire on the first floor of the two-story home on 11th Street near Godfrey Avenue about 11 a.m., said Executive Chief Daniel Williams. The two-alarm blaze was put under control at 12:23 p.m.

A 16-year-old boy had second-degree burns to his right hand and was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. A 50-year-old woman was also taken there for smoke inhalation, Williams said. The firefighter was treated at Temple University Hospital and released.

Youth shot during robbery try

A 17-year-old boy was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm after being shot during an attempted robbery in West Philadelphia last night, police said.

The shooting took place at 59th Street and Lansdowne Avenue about 8 p.m. The victim was shot in the left arm, then ran two blocks before being taken by medics to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Police reported nothing stolen and said they had no suspects.

A bit more for Penn State?

Penn State trustees have approved asking the state Legislature for $360.9 million for the 2010-11 school year, a 4 percent increase over last year's budget.

A school spokeswoman says it's the smallest increase request since at least 1964.
