The Philadelphia Police Department has three narcotics units:

The Narcotics Strike Force - These officers mostly work outside, often on corners, to stop street sales. They use both uniform patrol and covert surveillance to nab drug suspects. Officer Joseph Sulpizio works in this unit.

The Narcotics Field Unit - These officers concentrate on specific areas in the city. They are plainclothes, work undercover and focus on middle- to upper-level dealers who generally store drugs in homes and distribute them to street-corner peddlers. They use confidential informants to make buys and obtain search warrants for suspected drug homes.

The Intensive Drug Investigation Squad - These officers work closely with federal authorities, including the FBI and DEA, and go after the big guns. Their investigations are long-term, in-depth and based on intelligence to determine how the drugs get into Philadelphia.
