Ryan student killed by car outside school

Timothy Connors, a 15-year-old freshman at Archbishop Ryan High School, was struck by a car and killed after school yesterday.

Police said Connors was hit about 3:30 p.m. at Academy and Comly roads in Northeast Philadelphia. The teen died about 40 minutes later from head and body trauma at Aria Hospital-Torresdale.

The female driver, whose name was not released, apparently stayed at the scene after hitting Connors, who is the son of Martin Connors, a Philadelphia police detective, police sources said.

Investigators interviewed more than two dozen people who claimed to have witnessed the fatal accident. No charges were filed against the driver last night.

Hundreds of teachers, students and community members gathered at Ryan a few hours after Connors' death for an impromptu vigil, said Michael McArdle, the school's president.

"Timothy was an engaging student who had come to us from Our Lady of Port Richmond School and was a proud members of the class of 2014," McArdle said.

"His loss is one that will be felt throughout the entire Ryan community. Our thoughts and prayers go out for Timothy and his family."

The high school planned to have counselors available for Connors' friends, McArdle said.
