A 12-year-old girl coming out of a grocery store in Fairhill was struck in a fusillade Tuesday evening that also wounded two men, one of them critically, police said.

At least 19 shots were fired - including from an assault rifle - shortly before 6:30 p.m. at North Marshall and West Clearfield Streets, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

Police drove a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Small said.

Police also took a 31-year-old man shot in the ankle to Temple. He was reported in stable condition.

The girl, who was leaving La Dominicana Grocery at 625 W. Clearfield St. when she was shot in the right thigh, was taken by police to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where she was reported in stable condition.

"She just walked out of the grocery store when she was hit by a stray bullet," Small said.

Police found 10 shell casings from the assault rifle and 10 casings from a large-caliber semiautomatic handgun, Small said.

Police found an assault rifle in the back of a Toyota Camry nearby. The owner of the car, who lives a few blocks away, was being questioned by detectives.

Small said it was unclear whether either man was the target. The motive for the shooting was also unknown.

Police were checking surveillance cameras for possible video footage of the shooting.
