After 45 years, Rendells to divorce

Former governor and mayor Ed Rendell and his wife, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Marjorie "Midge" Rendell, are divorcing, Ed Rendell said Tuesday.

Former governor and mayor Ed Rendell and his wife, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Marjorie "Midge" Rendell, are divorcing, Ed Rendell said Tuesday.

The couple has been separated since 2011. They were married in 1971.

"It will be an amicable divorce, just how it's been the last five years," the former governor said.

The couple's divorce was first reported by Philadelphia Magazine.

Rendell, 72, said that he and his soon-to-be-ex-wife remain on good terms, noting they recently traveled together as a family.

"We went to Jamaica for five days two weeks ago with Jesse, Beka and the two grandkids," he said, referring to his son, daughter-in-law and their two children.

They are also continuing a professional relationship with the Rendell Center, a non-profit that promotes civic education and engagement.

"We're announcing a new project next week for the Rendell Center," he said, declining to detail the project.

When the Rendells announced their separation to friends in an email in 2011, they promised it would not be awkward and that their parting was amicable.

"It's the same as before," Ed Rendell said Tuesday of the divorce.

Asked why now, Rendell said "It's just something we wanted to do."
