An armed Temple University student who barricaded himself in an off-campus apartment in North Philadelphia surrendered peacefully after a nearly 17-hour standoff with police, according to media reports.

The student, who was alone, was believed to be suicidal.

A police SWAT team descended on the 1800 block of North Willington Street in North Philadelphia sometime after 9:30 a.m. Sunday, going door-to-door to warn residents of the situation.

The 26-year-old student surrendered about 2:15 a.m. today. Police say the man's parents told them their son was suicidal.

Police say the man never threatened to harm anybody else, though witnesses say some gunfire was heard. It was unclear whether police fired shots or flash grenades at the home in an effort to end the standoff, or whether the student returned fire.

No one was injured in the standoff.

The Temple News reported that the student was taken to the Episcopal Campus of Temple University Hospital for evaluation.

Temple Police issued a university-wide email notice at 6 a.m. that the surrounding area, closed much of the night, was open.
