Montco roads referendum postponed until 2010

A referendum for a $150 million bond issue for road building in Montgomery County that was postponed from this fall's election could go to voters in the spring of 2010.

At the groundbreaking today of a county project to widen Matsonford Road in West Conshohocken, Commissioners Chairman James R. Matthews said he wants to ask voters in early 2010 to approve borrowing for an array of traffic-relief projects.

The referendum had been planned for this fall, but commissioners shelved it out of concern that voters would vote down large-scale borrowing during a recession. The bond issue could face an easier climate in the spring, Matthews said.

"I will venture a guess it won't be worse than it is now," he said.       - Derrick Nunnally
