Police are scouring the city for the driver of a black and white cab who they said struck a woman on a bicycle early this morning in South Philadelphia and drove away without stopping.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was riding north on Broad Street about 2:40 a.m., police said. The cab, which police said may have been from Olde City Cabs, was also headed north and hit the woman near the intersection of Federal Street.

The woman, whose name was not released, was carrying a small dog in a backpack or in her bike basket, police said. She was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was treated for bumps and bruises, and released. The dog was not hurt.

The cab struck the bicylist either from behind or on the side, and the impact probably caused damage to the front of the vehicle, police said. They it is possible the driver did not realize that the woman had been struck.
