A car that appeared to be speeding ran off the road on Route 70 in Cherry Hill and slammed into a utility pole this morning, killing the motorist and a man who just happened to be there, police said.

Neither victim was immediately identified. Both men were pronounced dead shortly after the accident.

Cherry Hill police said witnesses reported seeing a red Pontiac GTO "traveling at a high rate of speed" on the westbound lanes of Route 70 in the Erlton section about 10 a.m.

The vehicle ran off the road near New Hampshire Avenue, hitting the pole and striking the man before the wreckage came to a halt in a driveway, police said.

The crash also knocked out power in the area, officials said.

The westbound lanes were closed for hours after the crash for the investigation and emergency repairs by utility crews.
