A Cherry Hill patrolman escaped with minor injuries early Sunday when a speeding car slammed into his cruiser from behind, police said.

Police Lt. Dale Matchett said an officer on his way to work about 6:45 a.m. called in a report of a weaving Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Route 70, near the Barclay Farms shopping center.

Patrolman Bruce Erney, 29, pulled over into a center turning lane of Route 70 near the Locustwood Cemetery, waiting to pick up the pursuit. Instead, his crusier was hit from behind by the Malibu, driven by William Powell, 38, of Marlton, 38.

Both Erney and Powell were treated at JFK Hospital and released. Powell was charged with driving while under the influence and multiple traffic violations.
