Police shoot armed man in North Philadelphia

Police say an armed man spotted on the street overnight near Temple University Hospital began shooting at them, before he was, in turn, shot by police. Details were few. But the incident occurred about 2:30 a.m., according to East Detectives.

The man was armed and in the vicinity of Tioga Street and Germantown Avenue, in the Franklinville neighborhood of North Philadelphia, police said.

Someone alerted police, who then responded.

The man began shooting at police when they arrived, according to police, and an officer returned fire.

The man was wounded in the shootout and collapsed several blocks away. He was taken to Temple University Hospital.
