Driver seriously injured in crash with SEPTA trolley

A car crashed head-on with a Route 15 trolley in Fishtown this afternoon, seriously injuring the driver of the car while also injuring one of several SEPTA riders, according to transit agency spokesman.

A car crashed head-on with a Route 15 trolley in Fishtown this afternoon, seriously injuring the driver of the car while also injuring one of several SEPTA riders, according to a transit agency spokesman.

The crash occurred about 1 p.m. as the trolley exited what is known as "the Delaware loop," which is across from SugarHouse Casino on Delaware Avenue, the SEPTA spokesman said.

Photos of the crash by news helicopters showed the small four-door car's front half crushed by the front of the trolley. At least one news website reported the driver of the car was killed, but the SEPTA spokesman said he was told initially that the driver was seriously injured.

Police did not have any information as of 1:30 p.m.

The Route 15 trolleys, which run between Delaware Avenue and 63rd Street mostly along Girard Avenue,  were running normally west of 26th Street. Shuttle buses were operating in place of trolleys east of 26th Street.
