A 42-year-old Delaware County man was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault while DUI and related offenses after he allegedly drove into and critically injured a 20-year-old St. Joseph's University student who was walking across City Avenue.

Malchijah Giddings, of Lansdowne, was driving a 2016 black Mitsubishi Outlander north on City Avenue, near Lapsley Lane, when he struck the student about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

The young woman, whose name was not released, was taken by medics to Lankenau Medical Center, where she was in critical condition Thursday, police said.

Giddings stayed at the scene, but was arrested after an investigation. He remained in custody late Thursday afternoon. Bail was set at $50,000. He faces a Dec. 28 preliminary hearing.

Carolyn Steigleman, a St. Joseph's spokeswoman, said Thursday that the student, a junior, was walking from the Philadelphia side of the campus toward the Lower Merion side when she was hit. The university sent an email alerting the campus community to the incident, she said.
