N.J. man sentenced to life in drug-related double murder

Jose Cortes, 41, was found guilty in March.

A Riverton man was sentenced to life in prison for a double slaying in 2013, the Camden County Prosecutors Office announced Friday.

Jose Cortes, 41, was found guilty in March of conspiracy to commit murder, running a drug trafficking network, firearms offenses and other crimes. The defendant conspired to murder two individuals, prosecutors said.

In December 2013, Christopher Humphrey, 34, of Franklinville, and Jose Vega, 35, of Camden, were found shot dead near the intersection of 33rd and Farragut Streets in Camden. The pair were dealing drugs for Cortes and Jorge Lopez, 35, of Gloucester City, another defendant. They were killed after Lopez accused them of selling someone else's drugs on his turf, the Courier Post reported at the time.
