Mother-daughter duo sentenced in theft of $536K from IRS

Maribel Nunez, 58, and her daughter Madeline Rosario, 25, were convicted in July 2017 on charges of conspiracy and theft of government property.

A U.S. District Court judge on Tuesday sentenced a mother-daughter pair from Philadelphia to lengthy federal prison terms and ordered them to pay back $535,783.47 to the U.S. government.

Maribel Nunez, 58, and her daughter Madeline Rosario, 25, were convicted in July 2017 on charges of conspiracy and theft of government property.  According to court records, between November 2010 and March 2014, Nunez and Rosario controlled five business accounts at Wachovia/Wells Fargo Bank. During that time period, the pair fraudulently submitted 106 tax returns to the IRS and then deposited the refund checks into the bank accounts.

Nunez was sentenced to 41 months in prison and three years of probation. Rosario received 72 months in prison and three years of probation. The case was investigated by Internal Revenue Service Investigations and the FBI.
