Fatally wounded carjacker's identity still a mystery

A carjacker fatally wounded in a struggle for a University of Pennsylvania police officer's gun a week ago still has not been identified.

A carjacker fatally wounded in a struggle for a University of Pennsylvania police officer's gun a week ago still has not been identified.

The man was not carrying identification, and checks of his fingerprints with FBI and state police databases have not produced any matches.

Detectives also will begin checking missing-person reports to see if any fit the description of the carjacker, officials said.

The man stole a van at gunpoint April 16 and, with Penn police in pursuit, fled on foot after crashing into a row of parked cars on Spruce Street near 40th Street, authorities said. When one officer caught up to the man, he struggled for the officer's gun, which went off, hitting the carjacker in the stomach. - Joseph A. Gambardello
