Detectives were seeking the gunman and a motive in the lunchtime shooting at 40th and Poplar Streets.

A 32-year-old man who had been shot in the neck and face was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:59 p.m., police said.

The woman was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was reported in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the back and shoulder, police said.- Joseph A. Gambardello
