A University of Pennsylvania law student was attacked with pepper spray in an apparent robbery attempt as she walked near campus just before noon yesterday, police said.
Philadelphia police said Eugenia Birman, 22, of Ithaca, N.Y., was assaulted by two women near 36th Street and Lancaster Avenue about 11:28 a.m as she walked to a Penn library.
Birman's family, reached last night, said she fought off the attackers. They knocked off her glasses and released pepper spray in her face, but she managed to call 911. The women did not take anything.
Birman was treated for her injuries and released.
