On way to parole meeting, Camden man is slain

A 37-year-old man was gunned down in East Camden yesterday afternoon as he walked to an appointment with his parole officer, authorities said.

Modesto Torres fell dead shortly after noon near the intersection of 17th and Federal Streets. Torres was released from prison in August after serving nearly three years for dealing drugs on school property. He was required to report daily to a parole office at the Volunteers of America as a condition of his parole, said Jason Laughlin, spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor's office.

The slaying is the 42d in the city this year. There were 33 homicides in 2006.

Anyone with information on the Torres killing is asked to contact Investigator Eric Wren at 856-225-8400 or Detective Wayne Matthews at 856-757-7420.
