Pedestrian struck and killed by train in Chester

A pedestrian was struck by an Amtrak train and killed yesterday morning in Delaware County.

The train - an Amtrak Acela Express traveling from Wilmington to Philadelphia - hit the man about 10:30 a.m. near the 400 block of Highland Avenue in Chester. The victim, described by Chester police as a white male in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released. Five Amtrak trains and a SEPTA R2 train were delayed in both directions for more than an hour, officials said.

The Acela train, which was carrying 267 passengers, was traveling about 110 m.p.h. - the authorized speed for that area, Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said. Passengers on the Acela train were transferred to another train to continue the trip. No passenger injuries were reported.
