Arrest made in Friday shooting outside lounge

Police charged a W. Phila. man with murder, while a stabbing yesterday also added to the weekend toll.

A West Philadelphia man was charged yesterday in connection with a shooting overnight Friday outside the 54th Street Lounge.

The arrest came amid a spate of weekend homicides, including one early yesterday in which a man was killed in Southwest Philadelphia.

Police spokesman Sgt. Ray Evers said that Naeem Davis, 24, of the 5400 block of Girard Avenue, was held on charges of murder and other offenses after his arrest about 1:30 a.m. yesterday in connection with the shooting outside the lounge near Wyalusing Avenue.

The victim was identified as Donnell Murphy, 26, of the 500 block of North 55th Street. He was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m. Saturday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Evers said Murphy was shot several times during a fracas that began when at least two women - one of whom was Murphy's sister - got into an argument in the bar. The fight moved out to the sidewalk, where the shooting occurred.

In a fatal encounter yesterday, police, said, a 42-year-old man was stabbed several times in a house in the 5400 block of Ridgewood Street in Southwest Philadelphia.

Homicide Lt. Mark Deegan said the victim, whose name was not released, rented a room at the address. He was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at 4:30 p.m., about 50 minutes after the matter was reported to police.

Detectives said they were searching for a suspect.

City police offered no new information yesterday about four fatal shootings overnight Friday.
